As anticipated by the Wilshire Medical Committee and Board of Directors, Los Angeles County announced at midnight last night a temporary suspension of activities at their golf courses, practice facilities and driving ranges in response to the COVID-19 public health crisis. The enhanced Order prohibits all gatherings and events, and clarifies that golf courses are non-essential services that are now closed.
We know many of these facilities have offered a temporary respite to our Members during our own closure and understand how disappointing this is to all. However, the County has now clarified what had been confusing to some regarding why their public courses were open, while Wilshire and many of our sister private Clubs had chosen to remain closed. Reminder: Our team of essential grounds crew employees will continue to work to keep our most precious physical asset, our golf course, alive and healthy during the shutdown.
As expected, the LPGA has postponed the Hugel-Air Premia LA Open formerly scheduled to take place at Wilshire April 23-26 (I meant to send this out a few days ago, but forgot). Wilshire is working with the LPGA to reschedule the event, hopefully to the early fall. This announcement obviously impacts the work being done by our LPGA Committee and our Members who agreed to house players and caddies. Further details will be provided to all volunteers very shortly.
Here is an abbreviated announcement from the LPGA:
After previously announcing the postponement of our events through the ANA Inspiration and following broadened directives from the various health organizations, we informed our players this morning that three additional events on our schedule are now postponed: the LOTTE Championship in Ko Olina, Oahu, Hawaii (April 15-18), the HUGEL AIR PREMIA LA Open in Los Angeles (April 23-26) and the LPGA MEDIHEAL Championship in Daly City, Calif. (April 30-May 3).
We have also announced that our first major of the season, the ANA Inspiration, has been rescheduled for September 10-13 at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif. The Cambia Portland Classic in Portland, Ore., which had previously been scheduled for those dates, will now take place September 17-20.
The Board joins all Wilshire Members in looking forward to better and happier times. Social distancing remains the simplest and most effective thing we can each do to slow the spread of COVID-19, protect each other, our loved ones and our greater society. Having been married for a while and with three daughters, I already have great experience with social distancing (receiving, not giving) and I’m enjoying spending this special time with my family. I still can’t wait to get back out on our historic golf course though, and I’m quite sure my wife and girls look forward to that day too.
Wishing all our Members the very best of health and happiness during these trying times.
